THE VOLCANO
Nisyros Volcano is the only Greek volcano whose crater you can enter and walk directly on. Feel the volcanic energy of the tiny island of Nisyros, explore the mesmerizing landscape of hydrothermal craters and lava domes and admire its wild beauty.
NIKIA
Cradled on the edge of the caldera, picturesque Nikia is considered the most beautiful village on the island. With its elegant elliptical shape and cobblestone mosaic floor, Porta Square is the heart of Nikia and home to the impressive Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos.
EMBORIOS
Emborios, a hilltop village in the north-east of Nisyros, was destroyed in the 1933 earthquake but is now considered the heart of the island. Built on layers of lava, ash and pumice, this traditional village is home to the medieval Pantoniki Castle and the frescoed Taxiarhis Church. The inspiring volcanic energy and incredible views of the volcano make this place popular with artists. The Panagia Listriotissa cave at the village entrance is known around the world as a natural sauna.
PALI
Pali, a picturesque fishing village in the north of the island, nestles on the natural bay. It is a popular spot for yachts with a sandy beach lined with tamarisk trees. It is home to the Hippocratic Baths and the Panagia Thermiani Church.
MANDRAKI
Mandraki, the island's capital, is a sleepy port town and an authentic Greek town. Pretty whitewashed houses with wooden balconies and colourful doors and window frames stand side by side with small grocery shops along atmospheric cobbled streets. The main square is the heart of the village and a great place to sip ouzo and eat mezedes. Mandraki has a folklore museum, watched over by the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani and Paleokastro. Sunset is a special time when the whole village turns golden as the sun sinks below the horizon.
